Antiracism for Delaware Council on Gambling Problems

Anti-racism in Behavioral and Substance Addiction Treatment: A Searching and Fearless Moral Inventory

Thursday, August 10, 2023 | 1-3pm EST

Description:

Counselors who specialize in treating problem gambling and process addictions increasingly work with clients who present with diverse, intersectional identities. Although research documents declining life expectancy across racial groups, clinical guidelines remain silent on how to recognize and interrupt institutional racism in gambling addiction recovery. In our current climate of increased anti-racist awareness, it’s time to take action and rehabilitate our industry.

In this presentation, participants will be introduced to tools of analysis to understand, address, and interrupt white supremacy dynamics when treating problem gambling and process addictions in recovery-oriented settings. Participants will conceptualize anti-racism through the lens of 12 steps and a framework to illuminate how inclusive transformation can begin.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the historical context of substance and behavioral addiction in the USA, and how it connects to White Supremacy

  2. Identify and compare the characteristics of addictive functioning and White Supremacy culture

  3. Become familiar with a 12-step model for transforming your practice

  4. Participants will discover resources for learning more.
